Is Grade 12 English needed for University?

As many people know (or have learned) University is hard. And it requires a lot of work. Many students drop out or go into great depths of struggle to make it through post-secondary education. The Charlatan quotes- "The 2011 Youth in Transition Survey (YITS) from Statistics Canada revealed that about 14 percent of first-year students drop out of their university program."  Students fight with debt and overall survival during and after college/university. This could be because they were not prepared for the amount of work they are given, or it could be a financial or mental health issue that is stopping them from their studies.

In high school, it is strongly recommended to take academic and university level English. Taking these courses can help get you into the school of your choice. The reason university grade 12 English is so important is because it prepares you for the oncoming work ahead of you, and it helps you realize the amount of writing you will be doing in University. University teaches you through books and sitting in a classroom, it is not as hands-on as College is. If you are book smart and like taking notes, University is easier to handle, so getting used to all of that by taking 4U English can help a lot.

Some students see English as their worst subject or course. And this is probably because of all of the writing and working you need to do in the class. There is a lot of reading and studying in it that may turn some students off. It makes them want to just take it applied and pursue their university dreams through other courses that they may be better at. Some may believe that if they want to study something like Science in university to become a nurse, they won't need a 4U English, but in reality, it is the opposite. University is surrounded by writing and essays that are needed to show your professor that you know what is going on in the class and that you are a strong student.

By taking University level English in high school, you are preparing yourself for the amount of work you will be doing in post-secondary. Just because you are studying something you think won't need English, doesn't mean it won't help you majorly. I do believe that all programs should have University English as a requirement because students need to be ready for what is coming. They need the support to be successful and make it through this next phase in their life.
